Timothy Williamson schreef een boek geheel opgebouwd uit convesraties. Op de Stone lezen we een voorproefje. Het is een discussie over de vraag of je als filosoof een eenzaam pad moet afgaan. De man is geïrriteerd omdat de vrouw eerder die avond een citaat van
Plato heeft aangehaald in relatie tot zijn ideeën. Zij vond het relevant, maar
hij wil zijn eigen argumenten verzinnen en zijn eigen standpunt bepalen. Iemand
anders overtuigen vindt hij niet belangrijk.

Egon: (…) In the end, the only
person I’m concerned to satisfy is myself.
Tina: Is that also your attitude in
bed?
Egon: There, I must feel the other
person is satisfied to feel satisfied myself.
Tina: But that’s not how you feel in
argument?
Egon: Even there I feel more satisfied when I feel my reasoning
has satisfied them too. But it’s more important to satisfy a lover in bed than
a friend in argument.
Tina: I didn’t know you rated sex
above philosophy.
Egon: I don’t. But there is more
danger of losing a lover by not satisfying them in bed than of losing a friend
by not satisfying them in argument. Anyway, mutual satisfaction is easier in
bed. In argument there is only one winner.
Dit is natuurlijke een grappige vergelijking. Maar als we de
analogie doortrekken dan is iemand die alleen geïnteresseerd is zelf
bevrediging, intellectueel aan het masturberen. Dat is misschien leuk, maar op
de lange termijn schiet het niet op. Je moet je hoe dan ook verhouden tot de
traditie.
