Over natuur en zelfmoord

“You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with the wind. You hear the birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little bit on the river bank. It's quiet; it's peaceful. And all of a sudden, it's a gear shift inside you. And it's like taking a deep breath and going, "Oh yeah, I forgot about this." Al Gore (in film An Inconvenient Truth).

"Die eekhoorntjes zijn de enige reden dat ik nog geen zelfmoord heb gepleegd, iets wat ik uiteindelijk wel zal doen, maar die beestjes zorgen ervoor dat ik daar nog even mee wacht." Adriaan van Dis (tijdens winternachten festival, Den Haag 2008)

“(...) After months of ineffectieve and frustrating labour which had produced a set of of chapters so vapid in content and repulsive in style that I could not bear to read them, I was totally stalled. Suicide seemed to be the only answer; unfortunately it was an exceptionele lovely summer in Southern Vermont.” John Kenneth Galbraith (in The Great Crash 1929).
